Discs are the cartilage pads that separate and cushion and help connect the vertebrae that make up your spinal column. They act like shock absorbers between each of the vertebrae and are constantly subjected to daily movements. Disc problems can be the result of genetics, normal wear and tear of aging or injury. Disc function is greatly affected by the alignment of the spine. An injury or structural imbalance can force a disc to bulge, protrude or herniate which then can result in contact with the nerves and causes pain.
As discs have roots that attach to the vertebrae above and below, they cannot slip, but bulge, protrude, split (known as “sequester”). These disc injuries cause an inflammatory reaction around the nerves, resulting in radiating pain down the arm or leg or across the chest depending on where the injury site is.
Chiropractic adjustment can relieve the swelling around the nerve root, which releases the pressure placed on the nerve and therefore relieves the pain.
