The term scoliosis is used to describe a condition, which represents an abnormal curvature of the spine. Scoliosis can be caused by congenital, developmental or degenerative problems. Most cases have no known cause and are known as idiopathic scoliosis.
Scoliosis can be detected from one shoulder being higher than the other, showing a sideways curvature of the spine. Idiopathic scoliosis is the most prevalent form occurring in approximately one hundred thousand in the UK, and is more often seen in girls. Whilst there is no known cause of idiopathic scoliosis it tends to occur in families.
Due to the abnormal curvature caused by scoliosis people can experience muscle tightness and referred pains. Chiropractic care can help to reduce the para- spinal muscle tension, and with regular chiropractics care adverse symptoms caused by the condition can be reduced.
Juvenile scoliosis’ treated early on can benefit from chiropractic care as treatment may help to reduce the progression of the scoliosis.
